Christmas with Snow in Sicily: A Return to Winter Wonderland
Sicily, unaccustomed to snow in recent years, seems to have realigned with the collective imagination this Christmas. There's significant cold and snowfall across many mountain areas. It all starts with Mount Etna, where snowplows have been deployed at Piano Provenzana (as seen in the photo). Even Caltanissetta woke up to flurries, lasting about fifteen minutes, as did the Agrigento area. It's a "different" Christmas this year, marked by wolf-like weather and true blizzards, the likes of which haven't been seen in years.
Temperatures have also plummeted in Palermo, with ice on some state roads and snow at 600 meters. Snow fell heavily in Gangi, Petralia Soprana, Caccamo, and the Madonie area. Similar scenes unfolded at Piano Battaglia, Prizzi, Lercara Friddi, and Piana degli Albanesi. The road between Palermo and Sciacca, particularly at Giacalone, had icy conditions. In Messina, Mayor Federico Basile has extended the closure of municipal parks and cemeteries until midnight on December 27th. This measure was necessary to allow continued safety measures, including pruning and removal of fallen trees and branches due to the extraordinary weather event.
The mayor's decree also stipulates that on December 26th until 1 PM and December 27th until 4:30 PM, the reception of the deceased is allowed exclusively in the forecourt in front of the main entrance; burial operations are also permitted on these days. The firefighters in the province received over 100 calls for various emergencies (dangling trees, animal rescue, roof repairs, aid to individuals, hazardous chimneys, unstable street lamps, precarious walls, stuck elevators, dangerous roofing material, peeling plasters, structural damage evacuation, road accidents, hazardous electrical wires, unstable antennas, landslides, rock falls, vehicle and equipment recovery, unstable scaffolding, and fire outbreaks, among others).
